Yet, it is an identity won at a staggering cost of over 750,000 Americans (soldiers and civilians) killed. That’s almost three times the number of Americans who lost their lives in WWII. As a percentage of today’s population, it would be over 5 million Americans. Never in the history of humankind has something so great been won of something so terrible.Why this extraordinary interest in the Civil War? It is the sheer drama of the story; the momentous issues behind and driving it.
